TBF of WNY was contacted by a homeowner in Avon, NY about helping them convert a large glass block window into an "emergency escape" window for them.
Our Design Specialist went out and met with the homeowner and listened to their desires and plans. The homeowner didn't want to put in an egress window like we would recognize, they wanted to just put in a new window in place of the glass block window that started above the garden outside of the existing glass block window. They planned to install a brick staircase on the inside of the basement wall so they could reach the window; but to go through the window safely they would need their sewage pipe rerouted to the other side of the basement.
Our Design Specialist was concerned because this isn't a regular way of putting in a recognized egress window; which always needs a window well attached to it to escape out of. Not having the window well can be dangerous in this area in the winter as there might be snow or ice covering the egress window which the cover to the window well would normally keep off. Upon consulting with a plumber, we found that rerouting the pipe to the other side of the basement would cost more than the homeowner had planned. They decided to hold off on this project for now.
We hope that when they are ready to install an egress window the homeowner lets us know, as we will be happy to install one of our safe egress window models like the bowman-kemp egress window or the rockwell egress window.
