Installing An Egress Window In Sanborn, NY
Challenge
In 2019 we were contacted by a man who had just purchased a home in Sanborn, NY. He was renovating the basement on his own to create a bedroom there, and because of New York State building codes he needed to have an egress window installed in his basement. New York State building code changed in 2015, and mandated that any bedroom installed in a basement needs to have an egress window with it. (This has since changed, in May 2020. Now any basement renovation that will result in habitable space needs to have an egress window installed in it.) And becauseof the town codes, there also needed to be an architect's drawning done for this installation as it involved a change to the structure of the home.
Solution
Egress windows are easy for Total Basement Finishing of WNY to install. Our design consultant met with the homeowner and measured the space that he wanted to put the bedroom into. After making sure that the wall that was to be renovated was stable and could support the egress window, we proceeded with the installation. The homeowner chose a basic Bowman Kemp egress window, that is attractive and very safe. We also helped the homeowner file a New York State Capitol Improvement form; which shows that the installation of the egress window was done up to New York State code.
